About the Kairos Palestine Document

KAIROS LogoThis document is the Christian Palestinians' word to the world about what is happening in Palestine. It is written at this time when we wanted to see the Glory of the grace of God in this land and in the sufferings of its people. In this spirit the document requests the international community to stand by the Palestinian people who have faced oppression, displacement, suffering and clear apartheid for more than six decades. The suffering continues while the international community silently looks on at the occupying State, Israel. Our word is a cry of hope, with love, prayer and faith in God. We address it first of all to ourselves and then to all the churches and Christians in the world, asking them to stand against injustice and apartheid, urging them to work for a just peace in our region, calling on them to revisit theologies that justify crimes perpetrated against our people and the dispossession of the land.

In this historic document, we Palestinian Christians declare that the military occupation of our land is a sin against God and humanity, and that any theology that legitimizes the occupation is far from Christian teachings because true Christian theology is a theology of love and solidarity with the oppressed, a call to justice and equality among peoples.

This document did not come about spontaneously, and it is not the result of a coincidence. It is not a theoretical theological study or a policy paper, but is rather a document of faith and work. Its importance stems from the sincere expression of the concerns of the people and their view of this moment in history we are living through. It seeks to be prophetic in addressing things as they are without equivocation and with boldness, in addition it puts forward ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and all forms of discrimination as the solution that will lead to a just and lasting peace. The document also demands that all peoples, political leaders and decision-makers put pressure on Israel and take legal measures in order to oblige its government to put an end to its oppression and disregard for the international law. The document also holds a clear position that non-violent resistance to this injustice is a right and duty for all Palestinians including Christians.

The initiators of this document have been working on it for more than a year, in prayer and discussion, guided by their faith in God and their love for their people, accepting advice from many friends: Palestinians, Arabs and those from the wider international community. We are grateful to our friends for their solidarity with us.

Kairos Palestine Committee

As Palestinian Christians we hope that this document will provide the turning point to focus the efforts of all peace-loving peoples in the world, especially our Christian sisters and brothers. We hope also that it will be welcomed positively and will receive strong support, as was the South Africa Kairos document launched in 1985, which, at that time proved to be a tool in the struggle against oppression and occupation. We believe that liberation from occupation is in the interest of all peoples in the region because the problem is not just a political one, but one in which human beings are destroyed.

We pray God to inspire us all, particularly our leaders and policy-makers, to find the way of justice and equality, and to realize that it is the only way that leads to the genuine peace we are seeking.

Kairos Palestine – A British Christian Response

Category: Kairos Palestine
Created: 21 August 2013

21st, August 2013

Time for Action is a call to British Christians to be involved in furthering a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis. It explains why British Christians have a particular responsibility toward the situation in Israel and Palestine and why there is an urgent need for them to be involved in supporting the call of the Palestinian church for international action.

Launched at the Greenbelt Arts Festival, the Kairos Palestine document has been put together by British Christians from a wide variety of traditions whose experience of visiting Israel and Palestine has compelled them to respond to the challenge made by Palestinians Christians in the Kairos Palestine document.

The Kairos Palestine document describes itself as: "A cry of hope in the absence of all hope." It builds upon previous kairos documents such as Kairos South Africa, 1985, and calls for confession, repentance and the rejection of violence. It challenges Christians around the world to hear their cry and recognize that now is a crucial (kairos) moment to act: "Are you able to help us get our freedom back? This is the only way you can help the two peoples attain justice, peace and security."

Time for Action is a part of a British response to that challenge.

Background Information

In December 2009, leading Palestinian Christians launched a document called A Moment of Truth; A word of faith, hope and love from the heart of Palestinian suffering. This became known as the Kairos Palestine document. Kairos is a Greek word that means ‘a critical moment in time’.

Time for Action presents a history of British involvement and demonstrates why Britain has a particular responsibility for the current situation. It then unpacks the interfaith dimensions before looking at the theological imperative for British Christians to engage with the issue. Time for Action then moves on to expose some of the daily humiliation and injustice experienced by Palestinians, before concluding with a Call for Action.

Time for Action was read through by Jewish and Muslim readers prior to completion and has been signed by 33 people who were involved in creating this response.

Kairos Palestine Condemns the Destruction of Bab AShams & the 2-State Solution

Category: Kairos Palestine
Created: 14 January 2013

bab-al-shamsBethlehem, 14 January 2013 – Kairos Palestine, a group of Palestinian Christians who co-authored the document "A Moment of Truth," denounces Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu's order to evacuate Bab Al Shams (Gate of the Sun), defying the High Court ruling for keeping the village for six days. Bab Al Shams is a new Palestinian village composed from tents established in opposition to Israel’s planned expansion of the Ma'ale Adumim settlement. In the early hours of January 13, Israeli special forces surrounded the village, detained all 150 overnight residents, and deposited them at Qalandia checkpoint. Netanyahu’s order explicitly defies a stay of eviction order previously issued by the High Court.

Bab Al Shams was established on January 11, when hundreds of Palestinians and international supporters erected a group of tents where Israel intends to expand the illegal settlement. It thus became the first new Palestinian village since 1967 to be built in the E1 area between East Jerusalem and the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) on Palestinian privately owned land.

Kairos Palestine has welcomed the establishment of Bab Al Shams, considering it a creative, non-violent tool that acts both to claim basic Palestinian rights – such as living on one’s own land – and to expose the systematic violations of those rights by the illegal Israeli occupation. The subsequent eviction of its residents is yet another example of such violations, and Kairos Palestine strongly condemns this destructive act.

We urge the entire people of Palestine, as well as the Palestinian Authority, to stand behind such initiatives, the individuals and communities who brought it into existence, and its fundamental right to exist in the first place.

Further, Kairos Palestine calls upon Christian organizations, communities, and heads of churches to condemn the forced disintegration of Bab Al Shams. This incident provides Christians around the world with a powerful and direct opportunity to show solidarity with Palestinians and engage in nonviolent protest against the occupation that oppresses them.

Indeed, support for initiatives like Bab Al Shams should extend as far as possible: all world governments and entities hoping and working for a just peace in our region must protect its right to exist and denounce its evacuation. As the Israeli government shifts further more to the right, and as it persists in building more and more illegal settlements on Palestinian land, the two-state solution grows increasingly untenable. Defending Bab Al Shams is a way to defend the viability of the two-state solution itself.

With the establishment and rapid dissolution of Bab Al Shams, not only the existence of a new village is at stake; so is the very meaning of peace with justice. We urge churches worldwide to support them both.

Sincerely,
Kairos Palestine

Response to the attack on the Monastery of Notre-Dame de Sept-Douleurs in Latrun

Category: Kairos Palestine
Created: 06 September 2012

By: Kairos Palestine
Latrun Sep2012With deep concerns Kairos Palestine heard about the attack on the Monastery of Notre-Dame de Sept-Douleurs. Early yesterday morning, vandals attacked the monastery in Latrun near Jerusalem by spraying graffitis with anti-Christian slogans and torching the wooden door of the monastery.

For the first time, since the Trappist monastery of Latrun was established in 1890, the brothers of the monastery faced an attack like this. At four o’clock in the morning they discovered anti-Christian slogans (like "Jesus is a monkey") and pro-settler slogans in Hebrew, which were sprayed all over the stone walls as well as a torched fire at their wooden door. Based on our communication with one of the monks of the monastery, the brothers are sure that the attack came from settlers.

This assault on a Christian holy site is not the first one. In the last months, Muslim and Christian holy sites in the occupied Palestinian territory as well as in Israel faced terror attacks especially from Israeli settlers and their so called “price tag”-policy.

Kairos Palestine strongly condemns this attack on the monastery. We urge you, our brothers and sisters worldwide, to ask Israel for a response concerning these violent attacks. We urge you to show solidarity with your Palestinian brothers and sisters as well as to raise awareness about the culture of hatred and racism imposed by the Israeli occupation and its consequences for the Christian and Muslim Palestinian population.

Kairos Palestine Press Release regarding the Attack on Gaza

Category: Kairos Palestine
Created: 19 November 2012

19th, November 2012

Bethlehem, Kairos Palestine - A Moment of Truth condemns the Israeli belligerent attacks on Gaza that have already resulted in the death of over ninety human beings and more than 730 injured, largely innocent children and women. Kairos considers these attacks as a violation of human rights, and is confident that the people in the Gaza Strip will stand steadfast and resilient in the face of the enemy and its destructive goals.

Kairos Palestine holds to account the International Community (UN General Assembly and Security Council as well as all international organizations) for the lack of protection of the Palestinians enduring the bombing of civilians and the burning of Gaza, when these same organizations champion loudly the protection of civilians elsewhere in the world.

Greek Orthodox Archbishop Atallah Hanna, Archbishop of Sebastia and a co-author member of Kairos Palestine earlier condemned strongly the ongoing attacks expressing sincere condolences to the bereaved families of fallen martyrs, and offering wishes for a speedy recovery to the afflicted and injured.Archbishop Hanna described the invasion as a tool of pressure and blackmail to force the Palestinian people to submission on their knees in order to give up their inalienable national rights. "This will not materialize", he said as he asserted that we should all together reaffirm our solidarity with and support for the human beings in the Gaza Strip who have long endured siege and oppression, and are now confronted with destructive bombs in a war that kills innocent children.

Kairos Palestine calls upon Church leaders and all religious and political powers around the world to shoulder this human responsibility of stopping the bloodshed in Gaza . We also call upon the Arab World, Muslims and Christians to move and act: Stand by the wounded Gaza Strip.
